(Tues& Thurs)

March 19, 21, 26: 5:30 pm-8:30pm

March 28: 5:30 PM - 10 PM

$300

Lost wax casting has been used for millennia to create metal objects using readily available materials. Participants in this course will learn how to create a silicone mold of a small object which will then be cast in wax. That wax mold cast is used to make a special plaster mold called an investment. The wax is then burned out of the investment leaving room to pour in molten metal! This course covers the lost wax process as well as how to pour metal ingots and create a DIY metal casting furnace! All participants should bring several small objects (anything that would fit in a 3in x 3in x 3in cube) to choose from as some objects may be far more difficult to cast than others.

Body Casting: Head and Shoulders Bust (18+ or with Guardian)

(Tues & Thurs) April 2, 4, 9, 11

5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

$400

In this workshop participants work in pairs to make full head-and-shoulders silicone molds identical to those used for special effects in movies and theater! The mold is then used to make a plaster cast of the students head. This workshop covers mold making materials and techniques, casting methods and plaster carving/finishing. Each participant leaves with a completed plaster bust in their own likeness which can be used for creating prosthetic makeup effects, wearable art or can be displayed on its own! Students also take home their molds which can be used repeatedly to make new castings.

The process of making a full head mold can be physically and psychologically challenging for the participant. We advise any participants with heart conditions, claustrophobia or severe anxiety to consult a medical professional before being molded. Due to these considerations this class is for ages 16 and up and only when accompanied by a guardian.

This class is MESSY! Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
